This hadith expert priest was born in 209 AH in an area called Tirmidz. And his name is attributed to a river in the area is often known by the name Jaihun. The scholars differed blindness that he experienced at that time. Some say that he was blind since he was born. But the truth is he was blind in his old age, the period after he traveled widely to study.
